How iCryptr handles your files, passwords, and support information.
Last updated: October 4, 2026
Encryption on your device
iCryptr is provided by Brendan Lindsey. The app encrypts and decrypts files on your device. It does not upload your files, passwords, or encryption keys to the developer. It does not require an account and does not include advertising, tracking, or an app analytics SDK.
Your password derives encryption keys locally. The app does not intentionally save passwords to settings or a password database. It releases password fields when they are no longer needed for the current flow, but cannot guarantee that every copy is erased from device memory. We cannot reset your password or recover a file encrypted with a forgotten password.
Files and photos you choose
You choose files and media through system pickers or supported document-opening actions. iCryptr processes those items to perform the action you request. It does not scan your photo library or other files for advertising or profiling.
Encrypting a file creates an encrypted copy; it does not erase the original. Originals in Photos, Files, cloud storage, backups, or other applications remain subject to those services and your choices.
Local storage and temporary copies
iCryptr saves encrypted output in its Documents storage unless you move or export it. Those files remain until you remove them or the relevant storage is removed. Device backups and storage providers may retain copies according to your settings.
Imported media can be copied to the app’s temporary working directory. Decryption creates a temporary plaintext file there while you decide where to save it. When you export a file, you save it to a destination you choose, such as a folder on your device or your cloud storage. That saved file is under your control; you can delete it using that location’s file-management tools. iCryptr’s temporary-file cleanup does not delete the files you have chosen to save, and the developer does not receive or retain a copy.
The app attempts to remove temporary inputs when their action ends or the app backgrounds, waiting for active operations to release them. Cancellation or an incorrect password can retain an input for retry while its screen stays open in the foreground. Unsaved decrypted output is kept while awaiting your save or discard decision, including across backgrounding, and is removed when discarded or its action screen closes. The app attempts to clean leftover working files on its next launch after an interruption. A crash, forced termination, suspension, or failed deletion can delay cleanup. Deleting a file does not guarantee secure physical erasure from storage.
On iPhone and iPad, app-created working plaintext uses the operating system’s complete file protection. macOS uses different storage protections; iCryptr does not promise that temporary plaintext is encrypted by the app. Access to an unlocked device can expose files while you work.
Optional thumbnails
File thumbnails are off by default. If enabled in Info & Help, the operating system generates previews and may retain cached copies that iCryptr cannot reliably clear. Turning thumbnails off prevents future app requests; it does not guarantee deletion of existing system caches.
Cloud services, exports, and websites
iCryptr encrypts and decrypts files on your device without sending them to the developer. If you open a file stored in iCloud or another cloud service, that service may download it to your device. If you save or share a file to cloud storage, your chosen service handles the upload. Your use of those services is covered by their privacy policies.
You can read this policy in the app without an internet connection. If you visit a support or privacy website in your browser, the website’s host receives connection details such as your IP address and browser information. Opening a website does not give it access to your files or passwords in iCryptr.
Voluntary support information
If you contact the developer, you disclose the information you choose to send, such as your reply address, message, and any diagnostic or crash report you choose to send. Review reports before sharing them; they may contain device details, file paths, or other personal information. Please do not send passwords, encryption keys, personal files, or sensitive screenshots.
Reports posted to a public GitHub repository are public. GitHub processes account and service information under its own privacy policy. Public copies, notifications, and third-party archives may remain even after a post is edited or deleted. Do not use public issues for personal information or security vulnerabilities.
Your choices
You can turn thumbnails off in Info & Help, discard unsaved decrypted output, delete saved files using your storage tools, and choose whether to contact support. Deleting an original, exported copy, backup, or public support post may require action in the service that holds it. Removing iCryptr does not remove copies exported elsewhere.
Contact
For support, privacy questions, or requests to delete information you sent for support, contact Brendan Lindsey using Contact Support under Info & Help in iCryptr. It shows the private support address and attaches no app data. Files you encrypt or decrypt stay under your control; the developer cannot access or delete them remotely.
